The National Mines Day was designed to publicise the value and cultural meaning of geological tourism, to encourage the use of the geological and mining heritage and integrate the latter with other features of the various places, such as the archeology, other natural resources, art, architecture, the customs and traditions, the wine and food. The event is promoted by ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale) [Higher Institute for Enviornmental Protection and Research] and sponsored by the National Council of Geologists (CNG) and by the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EuroGeoSurveys).

Together with other areas in the Province of Sondrio, the Ecomuseum of the Valmalenco is taking part in the Day with a special programme of events.
